Jet has been used since the Roman times to craft elaborate jewellery and even by Native Americans for the ornamentation of weapons.
In the Victorian period, "Whitby" jet saw the popularity surge as mourning jewellery, but due to its scarcity and price, it was subsequently replaced by black onyx, black tourmaline and black glass, which is now called "French Jet".
