This necklace combines hand-crafted ceramic beads from Makkum with a soft black textile cord, creating a piece that sits between jewellery and a wearable object. Each ceramic element is individually made, resulting in subtle variations in form, glaze, and surface.
The composition brings together contrasting shapes and finishes: a hand-painted porcelain bead with botanical decoration, a faceted ceramic bead with a warm metallic glaze, and a smooth celadon-glazed ceramic drop. The beads are threaded onto a black fabric ribbon that can be tied and adjusted, allowing the necklace to be worn at different lengths.
Parels van Makkum is a ceramic jewellery studio based in Makkum, the Netherlands, a town with a long tradition of pottery. Working at the intersection of craft, design, and material research, the studio explores ceramics as a medium for small, wearable objects.
